Centrosomal Genome! - A PNAS report

Respected All,

I wonder how I missed it! A 2006 paper in PNAS indicates that centrosomes may have their own genome! Unlike the nuclear, mitochondrial or chloroplast genome, it is RNA-based rather than DNA-based, and apparently includes an RNA sequence capable of duplicating the centrosome genome. The putative centrosome genome RNA sequences were purified from oocytes of the surf clam, Spisula solidissima.

They have shown by biochemical means and subcellular in situ hybridization that the first transcript they analyzed is intimately associated with the centrosomes. Sequence analysis reveals that this centrosome-associated RNA encodes a conserved RNA-directed polymerase domain. In this paper authors hypothesise that centrosomes contain an intrinsic complement of specific RNAs whch may provide new opportunities to address the century-old problem of centrosome function, heredity, and evolution.
